This week's topic is about my great-great grandfather's headstone. It has the wrong date of his death. Oops.

Addison G. Chapman was born 1837 in either Onondaga or Oswego County, New York. In 1857 he married Susan Blakeman. They settled in the town of Conquest, Cayuga County, New York. Addison was a farmer. A daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1858 and a son, Willis, in 1860. In August 1862, Addison enlisted for three years in the New York Ninth Regiment of Heavy Artillery. He served in the war, mustering out in July 1865.
He returned home, and he and Susan had six more children between 1866 and 1878. Their youngest, Mearl, died in 1898 at age 20 and is buried with his parents.
Susan passed away in 1906 and Addison in 1913.
The photo to the left was taken by my parents in about 2000, on a visit to Westbury Cemetery in Cayuga County. The year of death prompted some head scratching and was finally resolved by obtaining a copy of Addison's death certificate. Why the year is wrong was never determined.
Addison led an interesting life, and will probably be the subject of additional posts this year.
